Downy Mildew is a disease caused by the oomycete Pseudoperonospora cubensis. P. cubensis thrives in wet or very humid conditions and infects cucurbits including cucumber, melon, pumpkin, and squash. It causes yellow to brown lesions on top of the leaves that are restricted by leaf veins. As the lesions age, they usually become necrotic and the leaves often senesce. The leaves are the only portion of the plant directly affected by downy mildew. However, the loss in leaf surface can cause loss of yield, misshapen fruit, and sunscald.
Leaf Miners are the larval or maggot stage of several kinds of insects have developed this habit, including moths (Lepidoptera), beetles (Coleoptera), sawflies (Hymenoptera) and flies (Diptera). The adults insert eggs into leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae feed and develop within the leaf tissue and between leaf surfaces. They produce large patches or winding tunnels of dead tissue. The larvae are active for about two to three weeks. Unchecked damage can cause excessive leaf-drop and other severe effects. The feeding tunnels created on the foliage can become pathways for diseases or fungal spores.
The objective of this trial was to compare effectiveness of Difenoconazole and Cyromazine to control Downy Mildew and Leaf Miners, respectively, when applied alone and in conjunction with InnoAg Pro. Four treatments were performed with different dose combinations of Difenoconazole and Cyromazine tank-mixed with InnoAg Pro. After application four follow-ups were done. The treatments are described below:
T1: Control
T2: Difenoconazole and Cyromazine (600g+375ml/ha) Application: Foliar
T3: Difenoconazole, Cyromazine and InnoAg Pro (450g+281.3ml+300ml/ha) Application: Foliar.
T4: Difenoconazole, Cyromazine and InnoAg Pro (300g+187.5ml+300ml/ha) Application: Foliar.
InnoAg Pro is a bio-nano adjuvant which delivers plant protection products more efficiently to plant cells. It has been proven to increase the effectiveness of herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, and defoliants. When tank-mixed with a crop protection product, InnoAg Pro creates a shield around the active ingredient which increases spread and adhesion to the weed surface, and penetration onto the plant tissue making active ingredients more effective. The increased pesticide effectiveness triggered by InnoAg Pro frequently allows for a 25 to 30% rate reduction on pesticide application.
The trial results clearly show that the addition of InnoAg Pro to Difenoconazole and Cyromazine gave better results.
Leaf miner Control: Efficacy was measured by taking an account of the number of pupae and the number of remnant larva on the new leaves in each treatment. The results showed that 25% reduction of Cyromazine + InnoAg Pro at 300ml/ha, provided 90.1% efficacy. Cyromazine at 50% of the recommended rate tan-mixed with InnoAg Pro also provided better leaf miner control than the conventional dose of Cyromazine alone. However, it is not recommended to reduce the recommended label rate by 50% when tank mixing with adjuvants, especially in high pest pressure conditions.
Downy mildew Control: The addition of InnoAg Pro, at 300 ml per ha, to 75% and 50% of Difenoconazole rate significantly improved downy mildew control as compared to Difenoconazole alone at 100% of the recommended rate. Difenoconazole at 75% of the standard dose, tank-mixed with InnoAg Pro yielded the best result, whereas the 50% Difenoconazole dose reduction with the adjuvant also provided better Downy Mildew control than the full dose of Difenoconazole alone.
Under the conditions of this trial, the results support the assertion that a 25% reduction on Difenoconazole and Cyromazine rate delivers superior pest control mixed with the bio-nano adjuvant, InnoAg Pro. The addition of InnoAg Pro is cost-effective as well as supports sustainability. Our own Pam Marrone attended the recent California State Board of Food & Agriculture* meeting on December 16th, 2020. Below are highlights from a discussion on Ag innovation.
Walt Duflock (Vice-President of Innovation for Western Growers) and Dennis Donohue (Director of Western Growers Center for Innovation & Technology) gave a talk to the California State Board of Food & Agriculture about ag innovation. They recollected a time when the industry was very competitive and growers were not cooperating on the things that held them back like water, food safety, and labor. Things have improved somewhat. Walt and Dennis made a call for enhanced cooperation among CA growers by putting capital together to attract Agtech ventures and to address key issues at hand. California has a broad range of specialty crops with diverse regions. Innovation in the produce sector is primitive compared to row crops. Little has been accomplished on specialty crops and there still exist many big problems to be solved. There are many entrepreneurs that are reaching out to growers with their innovative solutions. Now, the time is critical for attracting venture capital and to scale up the startups. For these reasons, Western Growers is spending more time on the vetting process of Agtech entrepreneurs. This will help entrepreneurs to get field trials for their members and thus help entrepreneurs scaleup their businesses.
Walt and Dennis pointed out that this is the most exciting time in the industry! We have grown weary fighting the same battles: labor, water supply, regulations, and food safety. There is evermore promise of technology and innovation that will solve these challenges to keep the business of farming viable in California.
Automation is critical to reducing dependence on labor, food safety challenges, water supply & quality. California farmers are 20-30% chronically short on the workforce. Members do not say they will cut jobs because of automation, rather they say that jobs will change from hard labor to better jobs operating more sophisticated systems. Walt and Dennis stressed that it’s not labor vs. management! We should focus on utilizing every inch of land for crop production using harvest automaton such as AI, visioning, robots, high tech tractors, etc. Western Growers and Western Growers Center for Innovation & Technology are helping startups with more mentoring and support to scale up faster through a vetting process to enable entrepreneurs to better compete with tech in Silicon Valley. They also suggested different ways to help startups attract more venture capital into the system. Having reference architecture and standard interfaces with tractors, large image libraries of fruit and vegetables in the field will help companies get to market faster and reduce the design and development time-period. The Center is working on a roadmap that inventories all harvest startups. Members and startups execute together and publish information from growers trying the technology. An annual report highlighting the impact of harvest innovation on growers’ ROI (e.g., number of hours saved by using harvest automation) will be published.
The next big issue after labor is food safety, and there is a need to better identify the problems and fix them. The goal here is to also map the companies and help them scale faster. Which technologies can be used in the tech stack? Western Growers is leading the way on food safety. For example, more products can be tested for pathogens in hours rather than weeks. There is a need to brainstorm ways to scale these testing technologies to fix food safety problems before they get widespread.
Debbie Reed from the Ecosystems Services Market Consortium also spoke at the State Board meeting. Ecosystems Services Market Consortium is a fairly new impact-driven non-profit startup focused on issues related to the impact of agriculture on climate change. Debbie spoke about scaling up soil health across the country which is an initiative in sync with the organization’s mission to advance ecosystem service markets that incentivize farmers and ranchers to improve soil health systems that benefit society. Debbie mentioned they are collaborating with ESMC members on a series of pilot projects in major agricultural production systems to test and refine their protocols and tools. They have a project in Kansas with wheat growers and are just starting on specialty crops.
Walt or Dennis will represent Western Growers in the BAW Congress 2021 and share the knowledge and insight to address various issues in BioAg industry.
*The California State Board of Food and Agriculture serves the interest of the state’s diverse agricultural community and it is a fifteen-member state board, appointed by the Governor. The Board serves as an advisory board to the governor and secretary, representing a broad range of agricultural commodities, a variety of geographic regions, and both the University of California and California State University academic systems. It addresses key issues that are of importance to California’s farmers and ranchers, community stakeholders, and citizens. The board encourages public participation and input in all matters concerning agriculture and food policy within the state.
InnoAg Pro is a bio-nano adjuvant that delivers plant protection products more efficiently to plant cells. It has been proven to increase the effectiveness of herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, and defoliants. When tank-mixed with an herbicide, InnoAg Pro creates a shield around the active ingredient which increases spread and adhesion to the weed surface, and penetration onto the weed tissue making active ingredients more effective. The increased pesticide effectiveness triggered by InnoAg Pro frequently allows for a 25 to 30% rate reduction on pesticide application.
Recently, InnoAg Pro was tested in Indonesia for its efficacy against Imperatacylindrica, a rapid growing perennial grass infesting oil palm. The species is commonly known in English as “cogongrass”. Other common names in English include kunai grass, blady grass, satintail, spear grass, sword grass, thatch grass, alang-alang, lalang grass, cotton wool grass, and kura-kura among others. Cogongrass is native to Thailand, Philippines, Japan, portions of East China, and East Africa. Some countries in Southern and Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, Middle East, North America, South America, and Oceania have listed it as an invasive weed species. Several US states have declared cogongrass as a noxious weed.
The objective of this trial was to compare the effectiveness of Glyphosate to control Cogongrasswhen applied alone and in conjunction with InnoAg Pro. Four treatments were performed with different dose combinations of InnoAg Pro and Glyphosate. Each treatment had four replications. The volume of water used was 500 L/ha and the plot size was 10 m x 20 m (200 m2) each. The treatments are described below:
The trial images clearly show that the addition of InnoAg Pro to glyphosate treatment sped up the rate of leaf burndown and reduced the number of weeds in the field. Treatments L2 (InnoAgPro + full Glyphosate rate) and L3 (InnoAg Pro + 75% Glyphosate rate) provided better and faster weed control than Glyphosate alone at the full dose. InnoAg Pro did not show any sign of phytotoxicity to the immature Oil Palm plants.
Under the conditions of this trial, the results support the assertion that a 25% reduction in Glyphosate rate delivers superior weed control when the herbicide is tank-mixed with the nano adjuvant, InnoAg Pro. The addition of InnoAg Pro to the standard Glyphosate treatment is not only a cost-effective option, but it is also a step towards sustainability. InnoAg More is a liquid EC fertilizer containing rich micronutrients. It supplies primary micronutrients including Boron, EDTA chelated Copper, EDTA chelated Iron, EDTA chelated Manganese, and EDTA chelated Zinc to help optimize plant growth. This product gives plants a boost against abiotic environmental stresses such as salinity, drought, and extreme temperature. The EDTA chelation in InnoAg More ensures that the micronutrients remain active in soil or during the spray operation until absorbed by the plant through leaves or via roots.
The EDTA chelation in InnoAg More ensures that the micronutrients remain active in soil or during the spray operation until absorbed by the plant through leaves or via roots. On the other hand, Sulphate- and Oxide-derived micronutrients have relatively low plant uptake in comparison to the amount of micronutrient applied. The most common issue with Sulphate-based micronutrients is of precipitation. Phosphorus in the soil react with the sulphate micronutrient and forms insoluble precipitate crystals. Hence micronutrients are fixed in the soil and take longer to be available for plant uptake.
InnoAg More has been proven to aid root growth. A healthier plant with a stronger root system can absorb greater amounts of available nutrients and water from the soil. It gives the treated plant a boost against abiotic environmental stresses such as salinity, drought, and extreme temperature.
InnoAg More is best used during the vegetative stage of plant growth. This allows for faster plant establishment and more rapid development to the reproductive stage. InnoAg More promotes sustainability as the product contains short-chain polysaccharides that aid beneficial soil microbial activity which in turn helps in rebuilding soil health. Also, with chelated micronutrients, it reduces the amount of micronutrient to be applied. The product is available for sale in various states including Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Texas, Utah, and others. Synergistic Nutrient Combination to get crops to a great START.
InnoAg Start is a unique bio-nano foliar fertilizer with the ideal mix of primary, macro and micronutrients, not just traditional micro-nutrients. Besides NPK in equal proportions (14-14-14), it also supplies Ca, Mg and 6 essential micro-nutrients. Its unique formulation supports a uniform distribution of nutrients required for the initial growth stage and higher uptake. At the initial stages of plant growth, NPK plays a major role in stem and leaf growth, seed germination, root development, stress resistance and improvement of stem rigidity. It acts as a structural component of cell walls and improves root hairs (feeder roots).
It has been observed that the presence of many nutrients together can trigger chemical reactions leading to antagonism among nutrients. However, what distinguishes InnoAg Start is the perfect nutrient synergy, which is due to its proprietary technology. All the nutrients work with each other through the addition of proprietary enzymes derived from microbial extraction. The process starts with the isolation of microbes specialized in plant growth promotion, enhancement of nutrient availability, and performance. Metabolites containing enzymes are extracted from these microbial isolates and added to the InnoAg Start formulation. This combination also aids in chlorophyll production, cell wall formation, Nitrogen fixation, Nitrogen assimilation and Nitrogen metabolism.
The InnoAg Start formulation aids nutrient performance allowing for a lower dose, thereby reducing residues and cost per acre. InnoAg Start is used during the Initial Vegetative Growth stage of the crop. It can also be utilized at the fruiting stage (after 4–5 pickings) in multiple harvest crops. InnoAg Start supports sustainability by enhancing nutrient performance with its synergistic effect. The product is available for sale in various states such as Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Texas, Utah etc. and can be purchased from our website https://www.bioaginnovations.com/product/innoagstart/.
